We explore breast cancer treatments

Here is what you might want to know:
• A treatment plan must be worked out for your specific condition. Your age, stage of and many other factors are involved in deciding what to do next. The cancer patient must also keep daily life in mind. Things such as your job, priorities, routine and schedule might be interrupted by your treatment.
• It is always important to get a second opinion. Some survivors recall being tested up to four times with different doctors before the cancer was picked up on the tests.
• Surgery is one of the options that might be offered. The “minor” form of surgery entails only the cancer and surrounding healthy tissue particles being removed. In more severe cases a mastectomy might be necessary. This involves the whole breast (or both) to be removed completely. This might leave women especially feeling less feminine. Luckily reconstructive surgery might help to heal the emotional as well as the physical wounds.
• Chemotherapy is specifically created to fight cancer cells. Although it is not always necessary to receive it, it is sometimes seen as the last resort. Your doctor will know when, what and how much you should receive. As we all now, chemotherapy tends to make you feel sick as well. This might be the reason why so many cancer patients decide not to make use of it. But it has proven to work with great success.
• Radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy are other forms of treatment to be considered.
Whichever way your treatment leads you, make sure you do not face it alone. Having a support system in place is important.
