ONVERWACHT – There are sports stars among Modikwa Platinum Mine’s staff. This was evident when hundreds of the mine’s employees participated in various sporting activities last Wednesday. This was part of the mine’s annual wellness campaign in which it encouraged workers to take part in various sports such as cycling, marathon running and walking.
The miners gathered at the Montrose Sports Field where netball and the five-a-side soccer competition were presented.
Buses ferried the employees as early as 12:00 to have them ready on time for the games.
The cyclist’s starting point was Shaft 2 while the fun runners started at the main gate entrance. The fun walk participants started their walk just next to Modikwa clinic. Varius prizes and trophies were handed out for the best athletes and the Shaft that excelled in the day’s activities.
The management members also competed in a soccer match that involved legends of the game. South 2 Shaft team were the overall winners and were handed a trophy and gold medals. The mine’s wellness officer, Zelda Dzivhani, said they want healthy, active and dedicated staff. “The games encouraged our employees to be more active and to have some form of exercises. Most enjoyed the sessions and the management will organise more of this kind of events.”
Jaruska Warricker from Careways urged employees to check their blood glucose, BMI, and cholesterol at least once a year. In closing, the safety leader, David Pino, thanked everyone who took part in the event. The participants were handed goodies such as caps and T-shirts.
