LYDENBURG – The massive pothole that has been a huge risk for motorists at the corner of Viljoen and Voortrekker Street was “fixed” by pouring sand into it.
The newspaper has been reporting on this humungous pothole for months. On Monday a TLB made its way to the intersection, poured in some sand and building rubble, flattened the surface and sprayed it with water.
By Wednesday, however, most of the sand has once again been driven out by trucks and vehicles. Haul trucks making use of this intersection is still a huge problem and still, nothing has been done to reroute these trucks away from the town’s CBD.
Residents have been complaining about this intersection as well as the one at the Dullstroom crossing for months. Wendy Morgan, a DA Cllr in Ekhuruleni even wrote a letter to the newspaper expressing her dismay about the state of the town’s roads.
“I am embarrassed to say Welcome to our beautiful country. Foreign tourist must be amazed at having to drive on these roads, dodging potholes or should I say craters. These roads are a disaster and accidents waiting to happen, with vehicles having to swerve to miss huge holes The entrance into Lydenburg from the Dullstroom road is an embarrassment with no tar at all. I do not think a tourist looking for somewhere to stay would be tempted to stop over in Lydenburg, I certainly would think twice.”
