Ex-cop among those nabbed in Burgersfort Engen’s robberies

The suspects who were terrorising the people of Burgersfort. Insert: The suspects were found with guns.

BURGERSFORT – A former police reservist is among five suspects arrested on May 9 for orchestrating several trio crimes in Tubatse.

They appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on charges of business robbery on Monday. They are aged between 22 and 30 and were identified as Thabang Mokganyetsi, William Mokoena, Comfort Sefoloshe, Tumelo Kgaphola and Prince Masanabo.

Brig Motlafelo Mojapelo said the suspects were arrested through a well-coordinated intelligence-driven operation comprising members from various police units.”These notorious men were picked up one by one while asleep at different locations. Police followed up on information about these culprits who have been tormenting the community of Burgersfort, committing serious crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, business and house robberies.

“A former police reservist, who is believed to be the kingpin behind these crimes, was arrested at Ga-Selala Village. He was found with two pistols and a rifle,” said Mojapelo.

According to the SAPS, the accused are linked to armed robberies at Burgersfort Engen Garage, two armed robberies at NWJ Tubatse Crossing Mall and two armed robberies at PPS Filling Station.

“They are also linked to the hijacking of a Toyota Avanza and a murder in Burgersfort. They are alleged to be responsible for business robberies in Ga-Mashamotane and Riba Cross villages.

The five accused were remanded in custody and appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court for a formal bail application yesterday.”
