BURGERSFORT – There were scenes resembling a horror movie at Mashifane Cemetery during the funeral of a woman, Kgaogelo Makofane of Mashamothane Village on Saturday morning. According to Limpopo provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, two men, Richard Makofane (Kgaogelo’s husband) and his unidentified friend were killed by the mourning family. Shortly after the murders Tubatse SAPS, led by Col Mahlathini Ngele, arrested three people. Eric Magale, Comfort Magale and Kgaogelo’s mother, Jane Makofane appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on January 8 on charges of murder, violation of a grave, malicious damage to property and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“They were all remanded in custody. Their case was postponed to January 15 for further police investigation and more arrests are expected,” Ngoepe stated. He said it is alleged that when the two men arrived at the cemetery a member of the family produced a firearm and shot both of them.”They set them alight, threw their bodies into the grave and put the woman’s coffin on top of their bodies before filling the grave,” Ngoepe said.

“The bodies of the men and the woman were excavated for police investigation.” According to eyewitnesses, after seeing the attack other mourners and pastors ran from the cemetery. Chairs and equipment belonging to the undertaker were also damaged and burnt. The police said the motive is unknown but investigations will reveal more details.

Limpopo SAPS commissioner,Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba strongly condemned the incident. “We plead with communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Those who commit crime will face the wrath of the law.” Tubatse SAPS requested Sydney Makofane to hand himself over at the nearest station to assist the police in this matter. Ngoepe concluded, “Anyone who can assist with information which can lead to the arrest of the other suspects or those who see Sydney, contact Ngele on 082-573-3645.”
