They dug up the rubble with picks and shovels, and retrieved the body. According to community members, emergency personnel certified the man dead upon their arrival. Limpopo police spokesman, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, warned the public about the dangers of illegal mining.”It’s a deathtrap. People are taking risks with their lives. We appeal to locals to report illegal mining at their nearest police stations,” he added. Ngoepe said they were still investigating the incident. Some of the illegal miners told the newspaper that although their lives are on the line they would not stop mining illegally because they have families to support. “We are jobless, and illegal mining is the solution to our problems. We appeal to the government and mines to offer us jobs.” In 2016 another zama zama was also injured while mining in Driekop at night.
