LYDENBURG – Four suspects managed to escape from the SAPS holding cells yesterday evening around 18:00.
According to SAPS spokesperson, Capt. Alfred Moela, the incident happened during the shift changeover. “Two officers from different relieves went to the cells to count awaiting trials prisoners. They started at cell no 4 where there were seven inmates. Three suspects attacked and overpowered the two officers and robbed them of a cellphone and wallet.”
The suspects then proceeded to take the cell key and opened the two other cell block doors calling for inmates to join the escape.
“Only one inmate from cell 1 joined the three and they managed to escape. Police officers immediately gave chase while others remained at the holding cells to guard the prisoners in the other cells. The escapees fled with the cell keys.”
Moela said that SAPS managed to rearrest Thulani Sambo (32) and Ishmael Mashele (23). Sambo was awaiting trial for robbery and Mashele for house robbery and kidnapping.
Paris Mathebula (35) and Themba Zungu (23) are still at large. They were arrested for house robbery and kidnapping and attempted theft of a motor vehicle respectively.
The cell key that was taken by the escapees was found abandoned next to the gate at the back of the police station
“We urge the community to assist the police with information that might lead to the arrest of these suspects. Any information and leads will be followed-up to ensure that they are apprehended once again,” Moela said.
