Eskom disconnection: Municipal area discrimination?

LYDENBURG – Its apparently lights on for Mashishing and other extensions despite the whole town experiencing the Eskom disconnection.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News learned that, despite the fact that the whole Thaba Chweu Local Municipal (TCLM) should be affected by the switch off, Mashishing and other extensions are apparently not being disconnected and allegedly not included in the power interruption.

According to Eskom’s Nasional Spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, Eskom is not aware of this and will follow-up with its team in the area. “Only those who pay directly to Eskom will not be disconnected. Those who obtain their power from the municipality will be disconnected as per the scheduled times. I will follow-up with the team in the area to establish if certain areas are not being disconnected as per the Eskom notice.”

The newspaper also tried to get hold of the municipal officials in order to gain perspective on the issue. Several phone calls were not returned and emails were not answered.

DA Cllr. Nicko Janse van Vuuren said that if the municipal region is to be cut by Eskom, that it should include all of the areas and extensions. “It is unfair towards those who do pay their accounts to find out that certain areas are not being disconnected. I also told TCLM to make provision for the switch on, but again this fell on deaf ears. Instead of having two hours of load-shedding, areas in town is now experiencing several hours without electricity on account of the electricity constantly tripping.”

A source said that TCLM apparently said that the agreement has changed and that load-shedding is only being applied per block or extension, but according to Eskom, they are not aware of any change in the agreement.

The newspaper will keep residents updated on as the issue unfolds.
