Schoolboy kills himself

LYDENBURG – A 19-year-old learner from Mashishing High hung himself from a tree near the local airfield.

Police and hazmat operator, Deon Broekman was called to the scene when Themba Skosana’s body was discovered on Sunday morning. Broekman was accompanied by the mayor of Thaba Chweu Local Municipality, Cllr Selina Mashego.

A woman collecting wood stumbled across the body and the police and other authorities were informed. According to Capt Alfred Moela, police spokesman, Skosana hung himself with his belt. “He must have committed suicide on either Thursday or Friday last week. He was still wearing his school uniform. He was declared dead on the scene, and the body was removed by state pathologists.”

Moela said that no missing person case was filed for Skosana. “Indications are that he stacked rocks on top of one another. When he hung himself, he must have kicked the rocks from beneath his feet, leading to his death.” Skosana did not leave a note indicating why he took his own life. “All officers found in his pockets were school papers and notes.”

At the time of going to press, funeral arrangements had not yet been made.
