Puppies saved from fiery death

LYDENBURG – Four newborn baby pups were saved from burning to death in a field near the taxi rank in town this afternoon.
Cathy Schutte of Home4Paws called the newspaper in a panicked state to say that the dog she has been feeding for the past couple of days has given birth and that she can’t find the pups anywhere.
The field in which the pups were born had already been engulfed in flames.  “I couldn’t find the puppies or the mother anywhere. Two good Samaritans who happened to pass by also joined the search.”
It must have taken Schutte and Nicci Brown, one of those who offered his help to search, a good 15 minutes before the pups and the mother were found. “All the grass looked the same. It was also extremely long. We had no idea where she had given birth. When the mother came out of the field, we had a sense of where she might have hidden the pups and we eventually found them in the nick of time.”
The mother was presumably dumped when the owners found out that she was pregnant. “She is used to human touch.  People should realise that the only option is to stop breeding and sterilise their animals.”
At the time Schutte found the pups, the flames were a mere five metres away from where the mother hid the puppies.
They are now all safe at the shelter. “They are all exhausted, the mother very underweight and malnourished, but being looked after.”
