Historic building up in flames

DULLSTROOM – One of the most historic buildings in town has been severely damaged by a fire on account of what appears to be a case of arson.

The old stone house in Oranje Street which serves as offices for the detective branch in Dullstroom was engulfed by flames at around 04:00 on Thursday.

The damage caused could not be established as an investigation is under way. This was the first school building in town. Brig Leonard Hlahti of the SAPS at the Mpumalanga Provincial Office, was on his way to investigate.

The roof of the building was still smouldering yesterday morning. Capt Gerald Sedibe of Corporate Communications in Mpumalanga confirmed that a case of arson has been opened.

“At this stage, we don’t know the motive for the pyromania. We can also not determine the extent of the damage as the building cannot be entered on account of the pending investigation. Once the investigation has been completed more details surrounding the incident will be made available.”

Sedibe said that anyone with any information should contact Dullstroom SAPS on 013-254-0141.
