Thabane Primary in a poor state of repair

BURGERSFORT – Local communities believe the Thabane Primary School in Mabocha Village is not conducive to learning any longer, because of about 142 learners crammed into one classroom. It’s been more than a year since heavy rains destroyed the roofs at the school.Today, the classrooms are still without roofs, and according to residents and members of the school governing body (SGB) they have been pleading with the Limpopo Department of Education for a time but are told that “your school will be erected soon”.For years the school relied on poorly constructed classrooms that were built by community members in 1989. Because of the inferior quality of the materials, and the semi-skilled builders, the school is now in a dilapidated state. The grade one and two learners are affected; about 142 of them are squeezed into one classroom.”We cannot even move in class, it’s difficult to even see if one of the learners is absent, but the department still wants the learners to pass with flying colours,” one of the teachers said.Steelburger/Lydeburg News discovered that there was also no laboratory, library and staffroom. “The conditions do not favour any proper learning, when we think of coming to work, our hearts become sore. We are risking our lives. I was almost hit by a falling brick while teaching. We are just doing it for the love of the kids and the community,” said the teachers. The SGB members said they had written to the district and provincial department on several occasions without luck. “They just keep promising we were promised temporary classes, but they were never delivered.Spokesman for education, Mr Naledzani Rasila, said the school is on the department’s priority list.”Residents have to be calm. We are in the final stages to ensure the classrooms are erected at Thabane.”
