EFF disrupts council meeting

Opposition parties want Speaker, Ms Naomi Phala and municipal manager, Mr Johannes Mohlala out of the FGTM.

BURGERSFORT – Derogatory songs, fists, and insults were the order of the day during the Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Municipality’s (FGTM) ordinary council meeting last Monday. What was supposed to be a democratic and peaceful gathering ended in chaos, as the EFF members clashed with security personnel at the municipality’s chamber. This came after the Speaker of the council, Ms Naomi Phala, failed to recognise points of order from certain members of the council after the tabling of the audit committee reports. The EFF indicated that Phala was taking sides in running the proceedings at the chamber. The councillors disturbed proceedings by singing every time the mayor, Speaker, and other officials tried to continue with the meeting. The Speaker reacted by ordering the security staff at the municipality to evict EFF members from the council. The EFF overpowered the officers and continued singing. The meeting which was scheduled for 11:00 ended up starting at 16:00. In the songs they referred to municipal manager, Mr Johannes Mohlala, as a ‘thief’ and claimed ANC councillors were illiterate and beneficiaries of ABET education. One of the ANC members lost his temper and had to be stopped from physically attacking an EFF councillor.Police officers were called to the municipality, but they did not enter the chamber, they instead remained outside the building.Despite the commotion, the ANC continued with the order of the day. Resolutions were taken with councillors barely hearing one another during the meeting. The DA’s Mr Lethabile Kgwedi suggested that the council deal with the EFF’s grievances to continue with the meeting peacefully, but his suggestion went on deaf ears as the council continued.”This is too bad, and not conducive for good governance. Urgent intervention is a necessity. We can’t go on like this. The sad part of everything is that resolutions were taken, even frivolous ones,” said Kgwedi.

According to some of the councillors, this is the third time such meetings had been disturbed at the chamber. The opposition parties are calling for both Phala and Mohlala’s heads.
