LYDENBURG – The Mashishing/Lydenburg Parkrun has gone from strength to strength in the past year.

A week ago on Saturday, September 3 the participants did their 100th run.

On Saturday, September 10 the runners woke up to a beautiful morning, perfect for their 101st run. The parkrun is a five-kilometre race which takes place every Saturday at Bofhuis Mpumalanga Fishery at 08:00.

The initiative was launched on October 4, 2014, by Bruce Fordyce, the nine-times Comrades champion.

Fordyce is South Africa’s representative for parkruns and a world-renowned running legend with many records to his name.

Next month Mashishing/Lydenburg Parkrun will celebrate its second birthday.

According to Mariaan de Lange, a volunteer, they want to invite more residents to join parkrun.

“We are growing each week and everyone is welcome to join us. Participation is free and everyone is encouraged to register online, get a bar code for a unique athlete number and to print it out when taking part.

Everyone is invited, whether you choose to run or walk.”

Each event is organised entirely by volunteers. They set up the course, time the runners and process the results. “We urge the public to also volunteer.

“All of the volunteers work according to a roster.”

Those who are interested to volunteer can contact Mariaan on 084-806-0946.
