Robbers cause havoc at Sasol Garage

The surveillance camera recorded the whole robbery.

STEELPOORT – On Monday night five armed suspects robbed the Sasol Garage. Employees were held at gunpoint while they stole a customer’s vehicle. A surveillance camera recorded the whole incident.

The robbery occurred at 23:00 when a suspect entered the kiosk twice, pretending to be a customer. After he had left the kiosk for the second time, he returned with four other armed men wearing balaclavas and caps. They held the petrol attendants at gunpoint and forced them and two female cashiers to lie face down between the shelves.

One of the robbers, armed with a shotgun, remained at the entrance of the kiosk to keep watch.

During the robbery Mr Louis van Zyl drove to the garage after work to fill up with petrol and buy a cooldrink. He was unaware of events at the garage. “As I pulled into the garage two armed men forced me out of my vehicle. The one had a shotgun and the other a pistol.

“They aggressively warned me not to look at their faces. They took me inside the kiosk and forced me to lie face down on the ground. One of them also searched my pockets and took my phone and wallet.”

Van Zyl said he felt the cold metal point of the pistol against his head.

Two of the suspects threw the contents of a rubbish bin on the two cashiers and forced them to open the tills. The surveillance video clearly shows the suspects carrying cigarettes from the storeroom to their vehicle in shopping baskets. It also manages to capture two of the five suspects’ faces during the incident.

“They stole money and cigarettes from the tills and storeroom. Our employees suffered a terrible ordeal, but we are very glad that no one was injured during the incident,” said one of the managers at the garage, who wished to remain anonymous.

The camera captures the whole robbery which only lasted 10 minutes. The suspects fled the scene on the R555 in the direction of Jane Furse in a maroon Toyota Tazz and Van Zyl’s white Volkswagen Polo, registration number FZK 042 MP.

A source said the maroon Toyota Tazz could also be the stolen vehicle used in an incident in Rooikrans on January 9. He added that these heavily armed suspects could use these stolen vehicles for a larger crime operation.

Const Victoria Maluleka said investi-gations were still underway to locate and apprehend the men. If anyone knows the whereabouts of the suspects or vehicles, they should contact the police immediately on 013-231-0200.
