Pedestrian escapes with his life

Mr Simon Phlane was hit by the Hyundai truck after the driver failed to stop at the four way. The nearby surveillance camera caught the accident on film.

BURGERSFORT – A pedestrian was hit by a truck which failed to stop at the four-way junction in Dirk Winterbach Street on Tuesday. A nearby surveillance camera recorded the whole accident.

It happened at about 12:00 when Mr Simon Phlane crossed the road on his way to work. The driver of the Hyundai truck did not stop at the crossing and hit him at high speed. Footage shows Phlane being flung through the air for a few metres before he landed on the pavement.

An ambulance rushed him to Dilokong Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Mr William Makola, Dilokong spokesman said, “He only sustained minor injuries. X-rays and scans were done to see if he had sustained any internal injuries, but none was discovered and he was discharged the same day.”

According to an eyewitness at the scene, the driver was arrested and taken to the police station after the accident.

The truck was impounded. The driver was charged with reckless driving. “We do not condone negligent driving. Drivers should always obey the law, if they fail to do so, they will be prosecuted,” said Const Victoria Maluleka, Burgersfort police spokesman.
