Huge sewerage spill goes unnoticed

LYDENBURG – A huge sewage spill behind Lelievlei camp and next to the Heads and Sterkspruit, went unnoticed until yesterday.
Mr Frans Bloem, who is on the management board of Lelievlei, sent the newspaper images of this health hazard and said that this spill has gone unnoticed for an extended period of time.
“The spill runs past Lydenburg Bowls Club and will eventually end up in either the Sterkspruit of Waterfalls Pass River.
The stench is unbearable and sewage streams out of the manhole.”
Attempts to contact Thaba Chweu Municipal (TCM) on Friday were futile. When the phone was answered after the fourth attempt, the person said that all senior managers took leave to enjoy a long weekend. When asked to be put through to the department dealing with sewage spills, the person admitted that no one was available.
