The driver who dumped the chrome at Badfontein managed to escape, but the drivers of the two eMahlahleni trucks were apprehended by the company’s supervisors.

According to the mine, the retrenchments are due to the continuous drop in ore quantity and the depleted chrome price, as well as recent community unrest that occurred in the Driekop area.

“With the DMR being the custodian of compliance in terms of health and safety issues and the department conducting audits on the mine’s set standards, if ASA fails to comply with its own set of standards like health and safety of workers, the DMR will issue a Section 54 and those exposed employees are our members.”
Locals are curious about the court outcome and negotiations between the communities and mines after five cars, a bus, minibus taxi and 16 trucks on the R555 and Steelbridge were set alight by protesters on December 6. They ran riot, torching vehicles and blockading roads in the Steelpoort area

“An estimated 2 000 employees, including contractors, will be affected by the downscaling of operations. It is envisaged that the consultation process under the auspices of the CCMA will commence shortly,” Kasselman disclosed.
“I wish to state on record that ‘communities are raising genuine concerns however acts of criminality are subject for the law enforcement agencies and are deeply discouraged,” the executive mayor said.
