Crime fighters unite to hunt down armed robbers

LYDENBURG – Four armed robbers were apprehended in a joint effort by Sun Security and Lydenburg SAPS on Monday on the Frischgewaagd turn-off, mere minutes after excellent communication between Community Policing Forum (CPF) role players.

According to André Venter, who lives in the Frischgewaagd district, he received information that the farm stall of Salie de Jager, on the R37 Burgersfort Road, had just been robbed.

Information on CPF WhatsApp groups indicated that the suspects were making their way to Lydenburg, and an alert was issued for a red Mazda 323 with four passengers. Venter told Steelburger/ Lydenburg News that he quickly phoned Sun Security regarding the lead.

André Marx of Sun Security and his officers were immediately dispatched to the turn-off, as were Lydenburg SAPS officers. Marx said that as soon as he and his officials identified the vehicle, they proceeded to force it off the road. They arrested the suspects and found an undisclosed amount of cash and two firearms in their possession. It was later discovered that one of the pistols was, in fact, a gas pistol.

All four suspects will be charged with armed robbery. It is still to be determined whether the real pistol used in the robbery was a stolen one.

Lydenburg SAPS spokesman, Capt Alfred Moela said that he would like to extend his gratitude towards Sun Security for its swift assistance and support with the arrest of the men. The suspects appeared in Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday
