BREAKING NEWS: Man critically injured during freak explosion

LYDENBURG – A man was critically injured after a fire extinguisher exploded during a refill.

Lucas Magareng, an employee from Elmanji, sustained severe injuries as a result of the explosion.
The company which services extinguishers is situated in Joubert Street in the industrial centre.

According to Ellie van Vuuren from Elmanji, this was a freak accident. “We have been in this business for 26 years and this has never happened before. Magareng has been working for the company for eight years.”

Paramedics of Netcare 911 and ER24 attended to Magareng on the scene while hazmat operator, Deon Broekman, called in the assistance of an EMS helicopter from Mbombela.

A landing area for the helicopter was cleared opposite Kia at the parking lot.
The pilot, Dawid van Wyk, and flight paramedics landed at the scene a mere 20 minutes after the dispatch was called through.

Magareng will be flown to Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela. He sustained two severe leg fractures, a possible left femur fracture, a wrist fracture, chest and internal injuries. At this stage the exact cause of the explosion is not yet known.
