Man falls 300 metres to his death

BADFONTEIN – A 22-year old man fell 300 metres to his death in the Verlorenkloof/Badfontein area on Saturday.

Rescue worker, Mr Deon Broekman said that he was called out to the scene shortly after it happened. “We received the call just after 16:00. The man and three other friends went on a hiking trail and apparently wandered off ending up at the cliffs. At one of the slopes, he slipped and fell. One of his friends managed to climb down to him. He was unfortunately already dead. While the other two friends gathered the GPS coordinates, his friend made his way to the lodge.”

The search for the body of Mr Craig Tshabalala was called off later that night due to poor visibility and would only continue the next morning (today) using a light aircraft to look for the body of the man. “We circled the place where he had fallen a couple of times, but we could not spot him because his clothing made it difficult. While we were circling Capt. Pottie Potgieter and other rescue workers discovered the body and signalled us.”

The newspaper was informed that Tshabalala hailed from Johannesburg and that his father, Mr Patrick Tshabalala, is in the police force.

A sombre atmosphere greeted journalists when they arrived at the scene the following morning. Journalists were, however, not allowed near the accident scene until the body was recovered.

Shortly after 11:00 the body was retrieved and recovered. Broekman said that he spent about six hours at the scene on Saturday night and another four the Sunday morning. Police are still busy investigating the matter.

Getting information about the incident proved challenging as the whole of the town’s electricity was off due to Eskom maintenance being performed. Steelburger/Lydenburg News will provide more accurate information as it unfolds and will keep our readers updated. His body was taken to Whiteriver for an autopsy report. Tshabalala’s family are currently on their way to Whiteriver.
